How Sierra Senior Services Protected Seniors During the Winter Storm

This winter brought one of the most significant storms our region has experienced in years. Heavy snowfall and dangerous road conditions created serious challenges for older adults living alone across Truckee and North Lake Tahoe.

As a trusted Meals on Wheels provider serving Nevada, Placer, and Washoe Counties, Sierra Senior Services was prepared.

Because of careful emergency planning, our team acted before the storm arrived. Participants were surveyed to identify additional needs. Meals were delivered early. Frozen meals ensured uninterrupted nutrition. Shelf-stable emergency meals—generously supported by Liberty Utilities—were distributed so seniors could safely shelter in place.

For seniors relying on oxygen or medical equipment, staff confirmed backup plans in case of power outages.

When extreme weather threatens our mountain communities, reliable senior meal delivery and wellness checks become more than services—they become lifelines.

March Is National Nutrition Month

March marks National Nutrition Month and the anniversary of the Older Americans Act, the federal foundation for senior nutrition programs across the country.

Sierra Senior Services participates in the national March for Meals campaign, raising awareness about the importance of senior nutrition and volunteer support.

This year, we are setting a local goal to raise $10,000 to sustain and expand meal delivery services in Truckee and North Lake Tahoe.

Every donation supports:

  • Nutritious meal preparation

  • Home meal delivery for seniors

  • Friendly wellness checks

  • Emergency preparedness during winter storms

Your support ensures older adults in our mountain region receive not only nutritious meals, but safety, connection, and peace of mind.
