To improve the quality of life for every senior in our community and to foster a more giving and charitable society
Sierra Senior Services provides home-delivered meals, community dining, and social connection, and coordinates additional support services that empower seniors to continue living independently. Our vision is to create a Truckee/North Lake Tahoe community in which all seniors live nourished lives with independence and dignity.
History of the Meals on Wheels Program
The Meals on Wheels concept originated in Great Britain during World War II, when volunteers provided food for people who lost their homes during the bombings of the London Blitz. In 1947, the modern program as we know it began there, with meals delivered to frail elderly citizens.
It found its way to Philadelphia in 1954, and, since then, it has spread to all 50 states in the United States, with over 5,000 organizations currently providing services. In 2001, Sierra Senior Services was formed and the organization brought Meals on Wheels to the Truckee/North Tahoe area.
Each weekday Sierra Senior Services provides meals to eligible seniors with a medical need who are not able to leave their homes. This allows them to live independently in their homes as long as possible. To qualify for Meals on Wheels, a person must be 60 years of age or older and unable to shop for or prepare their own meals. All deliveries are made by dedicated volunteers who drive six routes covering the entire Truckee Community, Kings Beach, Tahoe City, the Placer County portion of the West Shore of Lake Tahoe, Incline Village and Crystal Bay. Sierra Senior Services also provides food through the congregate dining plan in the community dining room of the Tahoe Donner Senior Apartments. This community dining is available to all seniors in the area, not just the ones living in the senior apartments.
From customer service to calculating nutritional needs, our staff is made up of individuals dedicated to ensuring the delivery of healthy and nutritious meals to senior citizens in Truckee, and North Lake Tahoe, California.
