Our Mission
To deliver nutritious meals to older adults facing food insecurity that reduces isolation and enables them to continue living independently for as long as safely possible.
Our vision is to create a Truckee/North Lake Tahoe community for older adults whereby hunger, isolation and loss of independence is eliminated.
History of the Meals on Wheels Program
The Meals on Wheels concept originated in Great Britain during World War II, when volunteers provided food for people who lost their homes during the bombings of the London Blitz. In 1947, the modern program as we know it began there, with meals delivered to frail elderly citizens.
It found its way to Philadelphia in 1954, and, since then, it has spread to all 50 states in the United States, with over 5,000 organizations currently providing services. In 2001, Sierra Senior Services was formed and the organization brought Meals on Wheels to the Truckee/North Tahoe area.
Our Services
Tuesday through Friday, Sierra Senior Services provides meals to eligible seniors with a medical need who are not able to leave their homes. This allows them to live independently in their homes as long as possible. To qualify for Meals on Wheels, a person must be 60 years of age or older and unable to shop for or prepare their own meals. All deliveries are made by dedicated volunteers who drive nine routes covering the entire Truckee Community, Kings Beach, Tahoe City, the Placer County portion of the West Shore of Lake Tahoe, Incline Village and Crystal Bay. Sierra Senior Services also provides food through the Congregate Dining Plan for seniors over 60 without medical needs.
Sierra Senior Services also provides meals to the Homeless Respite Center in Truckee through a contract with AMI Housing Services.
