‘Tis the Season to Give! Help Local Seniors in Need

It’s a fact, we are living longer. The average life expectancy is at a record high of 79 years. While that is great news, for many, those later years aren’t the Golden Years that were promised. Many seniors today experience physical and mental decline that affects their mobility. On top of that, financial hardship and scattered families leave seniors alone and hungry. That’s where you and I can help. As the season of giving is upon us, consider contributing to Sierra Senior Services, your local Meals on Wheels provider. We not only deliver thousands of meals to local seniors each year, but we also provide companionship and regular check-ins to local seniors who may have lost some of their independence and are alone.

Donating Brings Extra Benefits

Donating to any organization, especially a non-profit is beneficial for you and the organization you are donating to. There are many reasons why you may consider donating. Perhaps you are driven by the company’s message and what they are trying to achieve, or you have a personal connection to the organization. Regardless of the reason, you are part of something meaningful. You are helping change the lives of those in need.

“It’s because of Aunt Margaret that I contribute. She was the family cheerleader and always had a kind word whenever I was down. She truly benefited from the hot meal she received every day. Even though she has been gone several years now there are still many people like her who need our help. So, I give what I can and think of her every time that I do.”– Long time contributor of Meals on Wheels

Sierra Senior Services Meals on Wheels Program

Last year, with the help of donors and volunteers in our community, Sierra Senior Services provided 43,000 hot and delicious meals to seniors in the Truckee/ North Lake Tahoe Area. Our local Meals on Wheels program continues to grow thanks to you, our generous volunteers, and our donors. While we are richly proud of our accomplishments so far, our aging population continues to increase. We are asking members of our community to contribute to help us meet the need.

“I support Meals on Wheels because of the connection it creates between the participant and the delivery driver. The seniors think that they are benefiting from the interactions, but it’s the driver who is truly uplifted through every conversation. I’m glad I can give some financial support as well as my time to this program.”– Volunteer Driver and Financial Contributor

No matter your reason, we hope you contribute this season to Sierra Senior Services.

It’s the generous contributors that keep our program running, enriching the lives of our local seniors in need.

“The Tahoe area is not an easy place for a senior to live but many seniors can stay with a little help. This program provides that helping hand and I’m convinced the great food and new friendships with the drivers have made people like my dad less threatened about the aging process.” – Daughter of Local Senior

Additional Programs for Local Seniors

Did you know that there’s a dedicated website for local seniors? Under the umbrella of the California Health and Human Services Agency, the California Department of Aging (CDA) administers programs that serve older adults, adults with disabilities, family caregivers, and residents in long-term care facilities throughout the State. These programs are funded through the federal Older Americans Act, the Older Californians Act, and the Medi-Cal program.

Check it out: www.aging.ca.gov

Also, check out our local connection points. There is help available 24 hours a day, seven days a week by calling the numbers below:

Connections for Nevada and Placer County Seniors:

  • Placer County – (833) 342-5211
  • Nevada County – (833) 342-5211

Making social connections is important. That is why Sierra Senior Services is happy to announce that our in-person, congregate dining began again at the beginning of May. The Congregate Meals Program serves nutritious meals to older adults in group settings with an opportunity to socialize with others. Our programs are hosted at the North Tahoe Events Center in Kings Beach and the community room of the Truckee Donner Senior Apartments in Truckee Voluntary contributions are welcome, but not required.
