Promote Good Health with a Cheerful Visit from Sierra Senior Services

The cheerful volunteers from Sierra Senior Services bring nutritious meals and encouraging companionship to the wonderful senior citizens in the greater Truckee/Lake Tahoe region.

There is no question about it, as we age our needs change. Our bodies process food differently and our social schedules slow down. A daily visit from the volunteers from Sierra Senior Services promotes good health in senior citizens by providing a nutritious meal that is specifically geared toward aging bodies and a friendly visit that encourages and cheers.

Meeting Nutritional Needs

Diets must be adapted to aging bodies. From healthy fats to fiber, senior adults need certain foods to promote good health. Age-related changes can affect how bodies process food which influences daily dietary needs and affects appetite.

Nutrient-rich foods are essential because as the metabolism slows down, fewer calories are needed and fewer nutrients are absorbed. Therefore, the calories that are ingested need to be as nutrient-rich as possible to ensure the body has a chance to absorb the vitamins and minerals it needs to stay healthy.

David Lutz, the Nutrition Program Coordinator and Chef at Sierra Senior Services is recognized state-wide for his skill in juggling the nutrition requirements and the cost of the meals delivered each day. His culinary expertise and keen ability to craft the perfect menu ensures that our seniors are well cared for and receive the VIP Meal Plan.

Meeting Emotional Needs

Emotional health may be affected if seniors feel depressed or lonely. It can do the heart and mind a world of good to have daily face-to-face contact and a scheduled visit with a dedicated volunteer.

On top of that, having meals brought inhouse each day allows many seniors to stay in their homes longer. Independence offers security and happiness to many of the seniors currently enrolled in the Meals on Wheels Program.
