Senior Concerns expressed through surveys and one-on-one sessions include transportation, housing, food scarcity, medical issues and decreased funding for programs to provide basic needs. Individuals from the middle class have been hit hard from the economic down turn and are at risk to lose everything financially with just one medical emergency.

Misconceptions regarding Sierra Senior Services
  • Truckee Senior Apartments is independently operated from Sierra Senior Services (Meals-on-Wheels)
  • Funding from the government is approximately $5 per meal up to set scope of service (up 20% annually)
  • We operate a commercial kitchen with insurance, permits and payroll equal to a restaurant
  • There is no charge for meals offered to individuals aged 60+ and we follow a "donation only policy" per to Federal guidelines
  • We are forced to absorb costs resulting from fluctuation in gas, food and delivery supply prices
  • Federal audit costs our agency more than $10K per year
  • Our program is available to anyone over 60 that qualifies, with two or more medical conditions
  • Medical eligibility for home delivered meals includes two areas of the following that are diminished: walking, transferring, standing, bathing, dressing, problems with prep for a meal or suffer from mentally competent issues
